Soon to be 94 years young Dorothy Botterell continues to make significant donations to Reach the Children’s Grandmas Gardens programme in Luwero Uganda. Dorothy’s husband Frank died in 2013 and he was an enthusiastic contributor and supporter of Reach the Children UK. Frank and Dorothy provided much of the funds to acquire the 14 acres of land that is today the Luwero Centre for Reach the Children Uganda country office, as well as the founding centre for Grandma Gardens. The 14 acres of bush land has been turned into large garden plots managed by Grandmothers, the care givers to their grandchildren. Grandmothers along with their grandchildren grow their food to eat, some to sell for school fees and pay medical bills. The programme is very successful and coming up to its 10 year anniversary. The future looks very bright as RTC Uganda plans to develop social enterprises at the centre, giving employment to the grandchildren and generate income to use for more charitable projects.
