Reach the Children UK funds the installation of a generator at the Luwero Centre in Uganda.
As the generator purred into action the lights flickered then burst bright, illuminating the office of Reach the Children Uganda at its Luwero Centre. Local children, fascinated by the advent of electric light in the village, hang around the windows enjoying the night time now they can see around the centre.
The recently installed 10kVa diesel generator provides power to the borehole pump located 150 metres below ground, tapping in to a large aquifer providing clean water for the whole community. Children bring their yellow containers each morning and evening to fill up with clean water and take it home. The incidence of water borne diseases has been drastically reduced since the borehole started pumping potable water into a 10,000 litre storage tank set on a five metre high steel frame, which gives a strong water pressure. Reach the Children’s investment in the Luwero Centre has been of great benefit to the local families and children. Now there is electrical power and a clean water source at the centre, Reach the Children UK plans to develop social enterprises there to provide employment and surplus funds to do more charitable projects in the community.
