Mandy’s knitting machine

Mandy went blind at 16 years of age with no chance of his sight being restored. Taken in at YOPDIDA he set about learning to use the knitting machine. I met him several years ago knitting a complex patterned pullover. I asked how he knew when to change the colour of the wool yarn to maintain the correct pattern.  He said he could detect by smell the different coloured yarns and had memorised a colour by its smell. The keys of the knitting machine are braille embossed so he can operate it by feel. Mandy is now independent and can earn a living making woollen garments for sale in his village.
